Qwen3.8-Max is the proprietary, API-only flagship of Alibaba’s Qwen3.8 family, built on the architectural foundation of Qwen3.5. Where Qwen3.7-Max was framed around long-horizon agent workloads, Qwen3.8 adds native multimodality alongside gains in coding, research, and agentic tasks.
Open-weight alternatives
Max itself is not open-weight, but Alibaba released two smaller Qwen3.8 checkpoints as open weights shortly after: a 27B dense model, and a 2.4T-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 95B active parameters per forward pass. Either is the starting point if you want to run something from this generation locally rather than through Alibaba’s API.
Access
Max is API-only — there is no self-hosted path to this specific checkpoint. If local deployment matters more than the flagship’s extra capability, the open-weight siblings above are the practical option.
