Comfy is offering $25,000 worth of prizes for open-source creative apps built on its Developer Platform. Announced on October 15, 2026, the Open Source Higgsfield challenge invites developers to recreate familiar creative features—or build something new.

Submission deadline: October 30, 2026, at 9 a.m. Pacific Time. Visit the official competition page to sign up and submit your project.

What is the Open Source Higgsfield challenge?

In its launch announcement, Comfy names Genjutsu and Cinema Studio as inspiration. The brief also welcomes original apps, rather than requiring a direct recreation.

The campaign frames itself as a response to an alleged unfulfilled open-source promise by Higgsfield. That is Comfy’s characterization; The Signal has not independently verified the original promise or its context.

Prizes: cash, hardware and API credits

The advertised total combines different types of rewards, rather than representing an entirely cash prize pool.

CategoryReward
Best Overall$10,000
Most InnovativeGeForce RTX 5090
Most ViralGeForce RTX 5090
Open Weights OnlyGeForce RTX 5090
10 runners-up$250 in Comfy Credits each
LTX VFX workflow bonus$2,000 cash
FLUX bonus$1,000 / $500 / $250 in API credits
MiniMax H3 bonus$1,000 in API credits

Provider bonuses require LTX, FLUX 3 or MiniMax H3, respectively, to be the workflow’s core model. See the official prize descriptions and requirements before choosing a category.

How to enter

Build a working creative application using the Comfy Developer Platform, with a usable interface and example outputs. Prepare a public GitHub repository containing the application code, workflow files, an open-source license and setup instructions.

The submission requirements also include a demo video of up to two minutes and a social post sharing it with #OpenSourceHiggsfield. A deployed demo link is encouraged. Use the official page for the current forms and complete rules.

Open source does not automatically mean local or free

An application’s source code and its generation backend are separate layers. You may be able to inspect and modify an app while still paying for the model service it calls.

Comfy’s Open Weights Only category specifically requires open-weight models and excludes partner nodes and closed-source APIs. Other entries may use partner models.

For readers evaluating the resulting tools, three questions matter: Can you replace the backend? Does the model license permit your intended use? What hardware or ongoing service costs are involved? A published repository alone does not answer these questions.

Why this matters for open generative AI

The opportunity is to make complex workflows easier to use and reproduce. A focused app could expose useful camera controls, simplify a repeatable visual effect or turn product images into short creative sequences. These are possible directions, not tested outcomes of this competition.
